Seth Godin Podcast Review – Episode #1: Freelancer or Entrepreneur?

Freelancer or Entrepreneur? is an insightful podcast by Seth Godin. I briefly read through some of the keywords and was fascinated with the topic. I didn’t know the differences between a freelancer or entrepreneur. I do freelance work myself which made me even more interested to find out what the differences are. I enjoyed the format of the podcast, 3 speakers who are all freelancers and entrepreneurs educating their audience on everything from problems you may encounter and have to deal with to putting value into your company and making people want only that. The content was relatable because of the simple, personal examples. There was thought put into how they explained sometimes mundane business strategies and they worked it into something new. Using metaphorical explanations. What I enjoyed the most was I got the answer I was asking before I even listened to the podcast. What is the difference between a freelancer and Entrepreneur.

Some important points that resonate:

A lot of people spend time getting their ducks in a row. i.e becoming a surgeon, going to school for many years and become a specialist.
but theres no time for that if you are an entrepreneur – entrepreneurs collect their ducks but really understand that you got to do something with your ducks. Understand the unlimited resources & opportunities there are.
Are you ready to do something with your ducks?

Listen to Seth’s podcast and maybe you’ll realize you have more entrepreneurial ideas than you thought!

Review of CBC Jian Ghomeshi’s Podcast: How A Convicted Murderer became an award-winning Novelist

How a convicted murderer became an award-winning novelist

Alaric Hunt is a prisoner. He was convicted of murder when he was 18 and resides in a South Carolina jail. He went to prison along with his brother because they were attempting to rob a jewelry store. The jewelry store was near a university campus and in order to bring attention elsewhere they set another small store on fire. In this fire, Joyce Austin died. A young women who was 23 and attended the near by university.
Alaric Hunt was sentenced to life in prison and the earliest he can get out on parole is 2018. When Alaric was 43 he came out with a book, won an award and got his book published. The book has nothing to do with his crimes but is based in New York a place where he has never visited.
In this podcast we hear from Sara a New York Times journalist who finds out about Alaric Hunt and gets in contact with him through written letters.

Careful Listening

Response to: The Power of Smart Listening
By Annie Murphy Paul

Active listening is a learned skill. Everyone can listen but to listen well you must listen carefully. Depending on the social circumstances my listening changes. For example when talking to someone about a mundane subject or something not of interest to me, I listen but not attentively. I do not improve my knowledge on that subject by listening to be ‘nice’, I just simply listen. When in class I am engaged and I actively listen, meaning I use the knowledge I already have and make connections to the professors lecture. I link my knowledge with theirs to gain a better understanding and therefore I am engaging in metacognition.

Careful listening is overlooked especially in realtion to natural sounds. We are surrounded by sounds like industrial noises and technological hums that we no longer tune into. They are background noise. Careful listening allows one to become aware of specific discourses and learn much more then if we just ‘listen’.

Metacognition
noun – Psychology
Awareness and understanding of one’s own thought processes.
